Howgill Image Baby Signing

Baby signing is based on Makaton which has traditionally been used with children who have communication difficulties. Based on British Sign Language, it uses one sign for one word and incorporates signs for the most frequently used words needed for everyday communication. Many people worry that signing may prevent speech from developing, but research suggests that the opposite is true. Signing positively encourages the development of speech.
Consequently, the use of signs with babies is an ideal way to bridge the gap between babies wanting to communicate their needs and being able to use words to do this. The ideal age for carers to begin signing to babies is around 6/7 months.
