Howgill Family Centre was established 30 years ago. We have been a registered service with the National Portage
Association for 2 years. Within the organisation we have approximately 30 practitioners trained to deliver Portage.
Portage is an educational home visiting programme. It helps parents to develop the skills of their children.
The areas of skill development covered by Portage are; self help skills, language, problem solving, motor skills (movement) and social skills.
Portage is usually used with children who have developmental delay or some other special need.
A Portage worker from Howgill would visit the family home each week/fortnight and they will demonstrate to the parent how a skill may be taught.
